The vibrant red snapper, often larger than its relatives except for the hefty mutton snapper and cubera snapper, roams the offshore reefs and wrecks of Miami, the Florida Keys, and the Gulf of Mexico. These prized catches are most commonly found prowling the depths of the ocean floor. Anglers seeking red snapper employ a variety of tactics, dropping live baits, jigs, and dead baits to entice these fish from their deep-sea hideouts. Despite their delectable taste, red snapper populations are closely monitored and regulated by federal authorities.

Our expeditions typically target red snapper around wrecks in the 200-300 foot depth range. These prized catches often come as by-catch while pursuing mutton snapper, cobia, or amberjack. Our efforts are concentrated on wrecks and artificial reefs off Miami’s coast. When fishing towards Key Largo, we occasionally encounter red snapper while vertical jigging or targeting mutton snapper. Employing a methodical approach, we navigate from spot to spot, power drifting and meticulously working ledges and wreck structures. Red snapper exhibit a wide size range, from 10 to 20 pounds, making for awe-inspiring catches of these beautiful fish.
