WAHOO FISHING CHARTERS

Wahoo, with their stunning appearance and elusive nature, present a thrilling challenge for anglers. Possessing keen eyesight, effective camouflage, and razor-sharp teeth, they often prove to be cunning adversaries. In Miami, wahoo typically range from 20 to 50 pounds, although smaller specimens can be found under floating debris. These speedsters are a constant possibility during offshore fishing expeditions, where they can be targeted through various techniques such as kite fishing, trolling, and vertical jigging.

HIGH-SPEED TROLLING FOR WAHOO

High-speed trolling stands as the primary and most productive method for targeting wahoo. Particularly effective in the Bahamas and South Florida, this technique involves towing lures at speeds ranging from 12 to 18 mph. Dark-colored lures rigged with cable and large j-hooks are preferred, mimicking the appearance of prey in the white wash behind the boat. Key areas for high-speed trolling include regions with strong currents and sharp drop-offs, typically at depths of 200 to 1000 feet.

SLOW TROLLING FOR WAHOO

Trolling at a moderate pace of 6 to 8 knots is another effective approach for wahoo fishing. Most wahoo off Miami are caught using planers rigged with strips or drone spoons, running at depths of 20 to 50 feet. Surface baits such as ballyhoo and feathers are also employed to cover the water column and maximize catch potential. Trolling large swimming plugs and swimming ballyhoo can also attract wahoo, especially when targeting the drop-off from 150 to 300 feet.

KITE FISHING FOR WAHOO

Although less common, wahoo can also be caught while kite fishing, typically targeting sailfish. Monofilament leaders with circle hooks are often used, although wire or titanium leaders may be necessary in areas with abundant toothy predators. Large blue runners, goggle eye, or herring serve as effective baits for enticing wahoo and other pelagic species.

VERTICAL JIGGING FOR WAHOO

Wahoo frequently gather under floating debris, where they lurk deeper in the water column. Vertical jigging with dark-colored jigs proves effective in enticing strikes from these predators. Their ability to swim stealthily contrasts with their lightning-fast bursts of speed when attacking prey. Wahoo’s exquisite meat quality makes them a prized catch, whether cooked or enjoyed raw as sushi-grade delicacies. As a trophy fish, wahoo often feature prominently on anglers’ bucket lists.
